In Sleep The World Is Yours

2013 | soprano/oboe/piano

In 2023, I created new versions for soprano/clarinet/piano; soprano/soprano sax/piano and soprano/violin/piano.

The soprano/clarinet/piano version wil be released in the 2023/24 season, after the Music of Remembrance premiere of that version. The sax and violin versions will be released in the fall of 2023.

Poems by Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger translated from the German by Jerry Glenn and Florian Birkmayer, with Helene Silverblatt and Irene Silverblatt

Commissioned by Music of Remembrance, Mina Miller, Artistic Director

Premiere on May 12, 2014 at Benaroya Hall, Seattle, WA.

Lullaby, Yes, Tragedy

The recording can be heard on Naxos' Opera Classics release, which also includes Tom Cipullo's "After Life" —

Also, if you are a mezzo-soprano, and want to sing this, here are a few suggestions for adjusting movement 1:

— m. 46-47 take the Db on "sleep" and the Eb on "there" down an octave — going up to the Db and singing the notes as written in m. 48, then jumping down an 8va for m. 49

— m. 53 take "you" down 8va, then as written for "are not" and in m. 54 take "cold" down 8va

— For "listen the river is singing" on p. 7:

m. 67 take "lis-" down an 8va, then up on "ten" and "the" as written

m. 68-first note of m. 69 take down 8va (or just take entire word "singing" down an 8va

— For "bright in the night when a dream cuddles"

m. 105 - last Eb - take down 8va

m. 106-111 take this all down 8va
